The Preuss School UCSD

"The Midnight Mechanics inspire each other, younger kids, members from their school, community and beyond to pursue their career goals. The Midnight Mechanics have created an opportunity not otherwise available in its school and has spread its success to others. They will work till 'midnight' to make a difference.”

Team 812 has been instrumental in creating a myriad of opportunities for our school using the ideals of FIRST.

Curriculum:
We implemented an engineering course for students in our school through courses both in High School and Middle School.
-Started Lego Robotics Course for 6th-8th
-Started a Robotics Course for 9th-12th
-Started Introduction to Pre-engineering Course for 9th-12th
-Started Principles of Engineering Course for 9th-12th
Mentorship:
Through the FIRST program our team has learned the importance of mentorship.
-Our team has mentored students in Physics, Biology,Calculus, Algebra 1 and 2, Geometry, Chemistry, and more.
-Through our continual mentoring we have helped the school develop a strong math and science mentor program.
School Unity and Spirit:
Our team has brought the enthusiasm for engineering, math and science from FIRST to our school in many innovative ways.
-We have yearly presentations to interest new FIRST participants.
-The school ASB has held a pep rally to showcase our team's robot and for us to present our awards and accomplishments.
-Our team has provided a unique opportunity for students to learn about engineering, science, and math in an competitive way, which has made us the most thriving club at school for students.
Scholarship, Internship, and Summer Opportunities:
Our team has distributed information about FIRST Scholarships and helped students get into summer programs and internships.
-Through participation in the FIRST Robotics program students have continued their interest in engineering, math and scienceby participating in engineering, math, and science internships like: MITES, COSMOS, NASA Sharp, Health Informations Partners Summmer Internships Programand more.
-Our impressive programming team has begun a partnership with UCSD's MPLab for programming internships this summer.
-Our team has developed a strong email list serve, which serves as a way to distribute information on FIRST Scholarships.
FIRST LEGO League:
Our team has started and mentored FIRST LEGO League teams for our middle school students for the past five years. We teach and share with them the importance of science and technology in our lives.
-Our team mentors have started four FIRST Lego Robotics Team at our school.
-Our team has been recognized for our outstanding mentorship with FLL Judges Awards and Mentor Awards.
Girl Power:
Our team has provided an opportunity for girls at our school to learn about engineering and develop interests to pursue engineering careers in the future. Girls on our team have dominated over the last five years as leaders and team participants.
-There is a 3:2 girl to boy ratio in our robotics team.
-Girls on our team have developed into great leaders: club president, communications and marketing director, programming leader, arm group leader, and outreach officer.
"Mini Midnight Mechanics" Middle School Apprentice Program:
Our team has provided an opportunity for middle school students to become a part of the FIRST Robotics program. We call them our "Mini MidnightMechanics."
-We have recruited 10 students from our middle school and they are able to work with our team members in various subgroups.
-We have engaged them in programming, helping to construct the robot and even getting them to work with web design.
Parent Involvement:
Our team has developed an ongoing relationship with our school's Parent Council these past years.
-As a coalition our parent council and our team has fundraised together selling Gold C Coupon books and have held food salesat various school events .
